How reading can boost your business and career

Must-read books to be successful in business

Smart people learn from their mistakes. Geniuses learn from other peoples mistakes. The benefit of learning from others mistakes is the investment that you spend on yourself. Invest by learning others misfortunes you/your business grows by learning about your competition, researching the nuances of your market, and determining reasonable expectations.

It is extremely difficult to be better than those before you if you do not know what they have done or what the professionals suggest? One lesson we have learned in business (especially as consultants) is no customer/client/partner/boss HAS to listen to you. You must make your audience NEED to listen to you. Yes…NEED. You may be thinking, “They should WANT to listen”. Well it’s simple…many can thrive without the things they want, but no one can function without the things they NEED.

Are you RUNNING a business or just owning one?

Before you become knee deep in entrepreneurship assure yourself that you have this personality trait. Will you fail without it? Maybe. Maybe not. But it could make the difference between running/growing a successful business and just owning a business.

COURAGE Ladies and Gentlemen! Courage is a must have when you are in control of your own destiny. According to the Encarta dictionary Courage is defined as: the ability to face danger, difficulty, uncertainty,or pain without being overcome by fear or being deflected from a chosen course of action. This definition is very uplifting, strong, and sounds like something Mufasa would say. Much like Simba, business owners cannot be afraid to make the tough decisions.

Many business owners (especially small business owners) have perfected the ability to MANAGE the business, keep up with budgets, and work well with their team. That all is great, except where will the business be in the future? As an owner you must manage people yet Run the business. Decide where the company is regressing, what new areas of business can company the company benefit from,is the current direction good for the business? As these questions and others are answered you will truly become an entrepreneur. The bigger picture will show itself and true growth can take place for your business.

Tasklists can save your business

OK. 2013 is in full swing and the new year’s resolutions have been set. The goals are high and most of them sound similar to this:

  • Increase profit margins
  • Establish community presence
  • Add digital component to current business model
  • Etc.

These are none other than goals. Goals are set each year, quarter, monthly, you get the point. However, how are you efficiently  completing these goals?  How are your employees viewing their worth within the companies goals. Will effort being put forward be noticeable/appreciated by your consumers?

These are all questions that need to be answered while developing you goals. How is this possible you ask….. Task list! Task list are vital keys to organizational success. Too many times have our clients said to us, “We have set goals, but we can’t reach them or measure where we lost focus.” How are goals set with no standards? As in life, one can not find the man/woman of the dreams if they continue to go from relationship to relationship without evaluating what is needed to succeed in the next.

Many business owners only record wins, losses, and “what is everyone else doing?” In business there is never a complete lost. You can always learn or reuse techniques. The key is to pay attention to the details and revise the plan of how to reach the goal successfully.

Each goal should have three action steps. Just like a story you goal should have a beginning, middle, and an end. Also, determine how your goal can be measured. (Please track the goal in increments. Do not wait until judgement time and decide that it did not work. Often, the goal was reachable, but the owner is not executing properly.)

If all else fails…..contact SquareBall Marketing. We are experts on getting you back on track. tasklist

What Have You Done For Me Latley???

Often times small business feel the need to promote what they have the capability to do for potential clients. What they can give potential clients. What they can collaborate on with their potential clients…… WE GET IT! You have potential! The downside for small businesses, is that every large company offers greater potential. As seen with professional sports, many people will over pay for the POTENTIAL opportunity of success. So, potential may not always be the best selling point to compete on against the surrounding competitors.

As a small business, your new clients need to see results. They need to be able to trust the little guy. Don’t feel disrespected this is all apart of building your business relationship with the client. Begin to promote the work that has been done with other clients, use images of successful projects as tasteful decor in your store front/website, and convince the new clients that your work can compete with others. See examples below:

a. Testimonials – Use testimonials of current faithful clients in your advertisement. However, make sure these testimonials include the names of notable companies,  Community leaders, of recognizable community figures. Please understand that statements from Jane/John Doe do not seem credible nor sincere.

b. – Develop a work log/Past project booklet that new client can keep. Make this small! Not only does this display your past work, but it serves as a secondary meeting after the clients leave. A small promotional item will allow the client to continue to spend time thinking of your business as the read it later. More time spent thinking of your business is more money spent at business.
